Count your garden by the flowers,
Never by the leaves that fall....
Count your joys by golden hours,
Never when life's worries call....
Count your nights by stars, not shadows,
Count your days by smiles, not tears..
And on any birthday morning,
Count your age by friends not years.

Thank you dear friend Tess for the lovely birthday card and gift.
The words above were on the card ... so true...
My little deer friends never forgot me on my special day.  They came and we talked ..
They enjoyed the food I provided for them and I sure did enjoy their company.

My little friends came this afternoon in the sunshine to get their food.
I was so close to them...about a foot away.
just the wire fence in between.  They can come through the gate which I leave open for them and often that's what they do to see if there are any munchies on the snow for them.
They are so gorgeously stunning.... I love them completely.

Remembering the Challenger shuttle disaster today.  Twenty five years ago it happened as I was home on leave watching the telly and having my breakfast.  I love the space programs and watched every live launch since I've lived here in Canada.  In Australia it wasn't live from the beginning of launch day like it was here in Canada. Seeing the astronauts go out to the launch site and watch them being suited up and put into their positions on board. What a process that was. There were hours of pre launch details I learned and remembered and enjoyed.   I cried all that day when the shuttle exploded.   Brave men and women .... and like Ronald Reagan said ....

"The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honoured us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and 'slipped the surly bonds of earth' to 'touch the face of God."

that's good advice ... be like a flower and turn your face to the sun... providing you have some sun.  It's mighty good for you but the sun is hard to find on these middle of winter days.   Poor old New York had heaps of snow today again and airports and transport came to a standstill along with school closures and 7 deaths I think it was from people being hit by snow ploughs.  Good heavens....    We are half way through winter and I guess its really gone quite quickly. I must admit that although I do love the snow I'm looking forward to the sunshine and my little flower beds coming back from a cement like existence over the winter months. I am continually surprised at how any of them survive.  But they do and  I'll have lilacs and daisies and my beloved forget me nots popping up and showing off their lovely colours....   come on spring ...........

She makes me laugh every day.  I usually put the kettle on and make some tea and a sandwich so I can watch her and the hubby plus daughter and son in law in their antics which I never saw in Australia. It wasn't until I came to Canada that I saw and loved the show.

Of course she's Jean Stapleton -  Edith Bunker.
From All in the Family.   I adore Archie.  He has so many comical expressions and ways .... the script is great and I never miss an episode. I've now seen them all so many times I can almost recite the words but every time I watch I still laugh and smile at their wonderful acting.

I made this wallpaper for your desktop today. It's part of the "Divine Desktop Wallpapers" collection.  They look super on all screens but particularly on the wonderful large ones like I have.  I really enjoy doing wallpapers and creating the different textures and very rich, opulent  vintage styles.
You can click on this one to see it full size... (might have to also use your computer magnifying glass that comes up) ... and click again.  I hope you like it and would love to hear from you by way of the comments section if you enjoy them.
wow... I've been working on my website pretties revamping a whole bunch of them and my right hand is now so sore. I wish I could crop, chop, paste, add borders, all the things I need to do ... with my other hand ... but that's a completely impossible idea.  I think I'll just go watch an old Turner Classic Movie and make myself a nice hot cup of tea and invade the cookie jar.  :-)    I can't bear to watch the news anymore because the flooding in Australia is going from bad to worse. When will it ever end for them.  I keep everyone in my prayers ...  at least we have milder temperatures here this week in the woods of Canada.  The sun has been shining over the weekend and melting a little bit of our ice.... but this morning it was all foggy and spooky and as I looked out the back window into the field... the trees were engulfed in a misty environment. It reminded me of a Sherlock Holmes mystery where I half expected to see one of those wonderful black horse drawn carriages come roaring out of the mist.   Could hardly see five feet in front of me....

Have any bloggers noticed that our headings are suspiciously coming out blurry.  I uploaded several of mine only to see the text fuzzy and nasty.  It must be a Blogspot glitch so I hope they figure it out soon and correct it. In the meantime I'm just using the ordinary text that is not an inserted image.   I've been searching around internet and it seems lots of people are having the problem happen to them as well so keeping fingers crossed that they will rectify it pretty quickly.  It's such a hassle to get any help from Blogspot .. there never seems to be anyone you can actually write to and get an answer.  Urgh!!!

Having my breakfast this morning I got to thinking about how breakfast cereals haven't changed one bit over the years. Perhaps a few decades and we're still getting them in plain old plastic bags in even plainer cardboard boxes.  Why don't they have zip lock tops on the plastic bags to keep the cereal fresh... or why aren't they designing a better box.  I guess they think everyone puts their cereals into plastic containers like Tupperware boxes etc.

With all the snazzy food presentations in packets, jars, boxes, plastic containers from  yogurts to cookies one would think the cereal people would at least give us a decent box....I guess they worry all about whats on the box ... attractive to kids.   Goodness knows we pay enough for these cereals. They must be making fortunes from them.  The boxes too have got smaller .... in height and width.   I find it a real pain in the bum to keep the top of the opened plastic bag inside the box closed for freshness.  Perhaps I might have to invest in a few containers to put them all into.

Wow where do these years, months and days go to. Two years since Obama took office of the President of the United States.  Already Valentines Day is on the way with red stuff in the stores... I've even seen Easter goodies.

I just had another birthday as well.  Looking in the mirror only to find more wrinkles and old age more than creeping up on me.  I think its taking the space shuttle .... zooming around my face probably saying lets put some wrinkles across the bridge of her nose or what about a few more around her mouth area.  Urgh!!!

Face lift imminent ...  have to win the bloomin' lottery first me thinks.   Oh well... I'll have to keep dreaming and keep moisturizing ......

gotta sleep.

Police officers in their full dress uniforms, and other emergency personnel, marched together towards the Metro Convention Centre in Ontario, Canada for the funeral of one of their own, Sgt. Ryan Russell.  14,000 people.  Amazing sight to see so many ... especially the beautiful red coated RCMP officers.  He died protecting people from a maniac in bare feet on the snow who stole a snow plough and was on a rampage.  His last words heard over his radio were "he's coming at me".

No doubt his bravery saved many other people from danger.  His retired father was also a police officer and he leaves behind a grieving wife and a little two year old child.  How terrible it must be for a parent to bury their child. I can only imagine the grief and unbearable pain.   Next time you see a police officer tell him thank you for all he or she does to protect us from danger.  They put their lives on the line every single day for us.

Thank you Ivymay for commenting on the horses in the Aussie floods. I was so pleased to hear that they were rescued.  I really appreciate you taking the time to write.  :-)

A great series on PBS ... Downton Abbey.  Second part was on the telly tonight and its very enjoyable.  I love the costumes of course ... set in 1913 ...  A story of family .. upstairs and downstairs dramas ... servants and all sorts of goings on.  The story began when the heirs to the family castle and fortune were lost at sea on the Titanic ... and of course the three daughters could not inherit ... it must be handed down to only male heirs.    I think its a 6 part series so if you have the chance to see it ...  don't miss it.

I woke up this morning with my hair all over the place ... and after shovelling even more snow than yesterday and having to push my hair back out of the way all the time ... not to mention covering my face almost completely with a scarf so my nose wouldn't be red ...  (winter weather is so cruel).....   I decided to chop off my hair this afternoon so now its much shorter and easier to manage.  Couldn't wait to get to the hairdresser ... so for my birthday this week I'm looking not so much like an old hermit from the woods ... anymore...  :-)   One thing about having your hair longer it sure does keep you warm.  All these bald men with no hair to cover the tops of their heads sure must notice the heat leaving their bodies and I can only imagine what it must feel like to have a head covered in snow ... yikes !!!

Four young Sitka black-tailed bucks fell upon good luck Sunday as they were pulled from the icy waters of Stephens Passage, Alaska by a group of locals on Tom Satre's 62-foot charter vessel. The deer swam directly toward the boat.
Once they  reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking directly at the humans on board. Clearly, the bucks were distressed. With help, the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals came willingly onto the boat. Once onboard, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering.
The crew did not know how long the deer had been in the icy waters or if there had been others who did not survive.  The good Samaritans (humans)  describe their experience as "one of those defining moments in life."  I'm sure it was for the deer, as well.

Poor little darlings... I'm glad they all made it to safety.  Perhaps they were trying to escape from predators. They sure do have a difficult life.  And they are very, very skittish. They must have been dreadfully tired, too exhausted to worry about danger.  Thank goodness for the kind people in the world.

Today is like stepping out onto the ice and snow in Antarctica. Wind chill gives us minus 30 degree  temperatures.  A voyage over to the mall was a feat of patience and endurance.

It is soooooooooooooooooo !!!!!!  cold.......  I think even the birds have scarves on.

Absolutely stunning. A little black deer. Pictures taken by RJ Verge near Beamsville On. Canada
Black deer are more rare than albinos. Just so beautiful.  Click on the photo to see it larger.

Deer are born with no scent they have more of a chance of survival from predators.  How clever is that.  These two little ones obviously are very new to the world... stay safe sweet ones ....

Yesterday's memorial service for victims of the Tucson shootings seemed to be more of a pep rally for the President.  And what is up with Michelle's attire.

I think the occasion called for something more formal and structured than a sweater with the sleeves pushed up. She looked more like she was having afternoon tea with some pals.  A too tight cardigan at that.  It looked weird I thought and I wasn't impressed with the cheering and celebratory actions of the crowd.  I couldn't watch it all.... I get very annoyed at what he's done and is still doing to the country.

Keep Australia in your prayers please
Sad sights on the news about the Australian floods. I cried this morning when I saw the horses trying to swim to safety ...  four of them level with the roof of a house and they had no way of getting up on top ... whether they were rescued or washed away I do not know.  Heartbreaking scenes of so many homes flooded and devastation.  Last week it was the same only a little less and at that time the floods had covered more area than the size of Germany and France.  How can that be !!!!  A few days ago they said it was more than the size of our British Columbia.  And that is one huge province.  I feel so sad and distressed for my country ... please keep the people and the animals in your prayers.  One person said they had seen sharks swimming up the main streets of the city of Brisbane....  and of course there are crocodiles and snakes too ...  it's a huge disaster.

A visitor today in the ice and snow.  I went down with a jug full of cracked corn for her ... and she was ready and waiting.  They hear me jiggle the jug ..:-) and the corn makes a noise which they seem to be able to hear right across the field behind us.   She went away full up ... it's so cold out there with not much for them to eat at all.

You can click on the image to see it larger...
and I love how they stand tippy toe ....they look like ballet dancers.  I guess its to allow them to jump so high and move so fast.  They bound across the field like kangaroos almost...  I love watching them ....

Sundays seem to be the days when I want to just snuggle up under a quilt in my favourite chair and watch the telly.  Nice cup of tea and some cake .... how could it get any better than that.  When outside is about minus 20 and things are popping and banging with the ice doing weird things ... expanding and contracting ...  I have no incentive to be out there when the hair in your nostrils starts to freeze and you find it hard to breathe.   Sundays too, seem to be the telly days when lots of my favourite programs are on like Desperate Housewives, Masterpiece Mysteries, an English show I like called Born and Bred about two country doctors .... I wish they wouldn't all be on the same night.  Oh well....  :-)   It's nice to have things to watch and it's nicer still not to have to go out into that freezing weather.

Awful events today in Tucson, Arizona.  People killed outside a supermarket.  A congress woman fighting for her life after being shot in the head... a Federal Judge dies.  So sad and senseless.  A little girl was also killed by some maniac.  It was a sombre day as I watched the television news about the happenings.

Snow and more snow.  Shovelling and more shovelling.  Had a busy day today moving all the white stuff that came down in the night.  It's mighty good exercise ... but so much of it. :-)

A mandatory trip to the Walmart ... because I only get to visit it once a year.... and surprise surprise... guess who was there.  Sherlock ...Love him love him love him.
A whole bunch of the old movies with other Sherlocks I'd not seen before plus 20 episodes of an old Sherlock Holmes tv series which I've never heard of so I was very pleased with my find.

Our trip yesterday .. well actually for the past 2 days ... was a good chance to visit a Walmart.  I would have liked a thousand spare dollars to spend.  That would have been wonderful.

oh well... I came away happy with my $7.00 Sherlock purchase...
It's not every day you can say that on  your trip to the hospital you see wolves.  Hubby and I made the very long journey on the highway which goes "north to Alaska" yesterday for a CT scan.  Luckily the weather wasn't too bad considering it can be a treacherous trip in avalanche country.  Two wolves were on the side of the river ... on the ice .... and the snow ploughs were out in abundance. We saw so many of them thank goodness.   With logging trucks, buses, cars and ordinary trucks, ambulances etc I guess they need to keep the highways open and operating.  It's such a huge country I'm amazed at what goes on here.  It was an overnight stay for us .... we were glad to get home again safely.   Two pics here for you.  I left them large size so you can see everything better when you click on them.  Do a second click on them to see them properly again.

Seems 93 year old Zsa Zsa Gabor is having to have her leg amputated due to unhealed "somethings" ... where gangrene has set in.   My mum also had to have her leg amputated a few years before her death .... I can only imagine what that must be like to think about happening to you.  At any age but terrible when you are old.

More gossip... Shania Twain who I think is so pretty and sings just fine ... *s  .... just got married to the guy who was married to her husband's girlfriend. Weird .. and confusing.

and Aretha Franklin who I don't know much about ... has been given last rites by her priest.  Gosh .. already 2011 is gearing up to be an eventful year.

Love the old vintage rose images... this one is no exception.

I guess our next big celebration is Valentine's Day.
The Christmas chocolates and pretties don't even have time to get sold or packed away before we see  other images of hearts and bows and arrows... all in red.

Then before we know it Easter bunny will be making an appearance in the stores.  Isn't it all so commercial.  I bet kids today don't even know what the real meaning of Christmas is.  Just give me more toys and then some more toys again.

At least these next two celebratory days give me an excuse to eat some more chocolate. I'm completely addicted...  *(s)

Happy New Year ...
1.1.11   Good day to get married because your hubby would never forget your anniversary.
Same goes for 11.1.11.... I guess when it appears.   I was married first time on 7.1.71...  7th of January 1971. This time when I got married in Canada it inadvertently ended up being on April 1st.  It was funny when we realised what Thursday of that week we had arranged date was ( April 1st.)  We had a very quiet New Years Eve till around 11.30 when I heard shots being fired. I can tell the difference between someone shooting and fireworks so I was distressed thinking that perhaps they were shooting my beautiful deer which I hadn't seen for the past week.  Then fireworks began and I hoped that all the animals would head for the hills .. being scared .. they would not have got killed.    I fed the birds this morning and found lots of deer foot prints so I guess they came when everything had calmed down .... still in the darkness of early morning .... I'll have to put their food out before I go to bed and hope that its only them that get it.

Beautiful sunshine here on the snow in the woods of British Columbia.  Bears are sleeping and everything else is out looking for lunch.  *s       A lovely day indeed for the start of a brand new year.
